Roberta's design kept the original fireplace, but moved the kitchen to create a spacious living room with an open dining room that's great for entertaining. Custom cabinets in walnut help define the living room area and in white create a kitchen space.
As an homage to the original paneling, Roberta had the terrific idea of installing walnut in one of the bedrooms to create a rich, warm feeling.
We added a sliding door from the front bedroom/office to the atrium, dramatically increasing the light and flow through the front of the house.
The original floor plan located the washer/dryer in the hallway. Roberta's design included moving these to the garage, thereby opening the space at the end of the hall.
The Landscape Artists
Megan Van Linda
Watching Megan design a landscape is like watching someone create an enormous painting with plants, decking, steel, and pebbles. Given all the glass at 1840, her work can be seen from nearly every room. It's a delight to watch it evolve with the seasons. Visit her website.
Dan Harder and his sons
The team at Custom Landscapes installed the landscaping. They made these Corten steel retaining walls, built the deck with fire pit, and installed all the plants, lighting and irrigation.
Fruit All Year
We planted eleven fruit trees along the south side of the property including black and green figs, pomegranate, Santa Rosa plum, tart cherry, Meyer lemon, Bears lime, variegated pink lemon, and kumquat.
The Atrium Artist
JohnFelix Arnold III
JohnFelix is an accomplished artist. His painting in the atrium is on marine-grade teak--a bit of an echo of the paneling that was used historically throughout the house--and was inspired by historical Japanese art. It incorporates maple leaves and other natural elements--bringing the "outside in." Check out his work here.
The Lighting Designer
Robert Moses Lim
Rob is a master of creating amazing paper constructions and lighting them in magical ways. Visit his website to see his gorgeous pieces. Together, he and Dena (the owner) made Cloud2 that lights the dining area.

It can be controlled remotely and the color of the LED light ranges from a bright blue-white to a low, romantic sepia.
The Eichler Painter
Dawn Bravata
Dawn is talented painter, musician, bread maker, and doctor. She came to visit and made this painting of men building an Eichler.
